Fire Belly Toads
I have five fire bellies. 3 green, 2 brown. The fact that they cost $5.00 and can be found anywhere does not bother me a bit. I find them fun and very beautiful.

As I said before frogs, etc...are very new in Maine and I'd break someone's leg to get a fire belly toad at one of our pet stores, which mind you I have to drive twenty minutes to get to one. Love your pics, Sheri, but on the tank picture I don't see a water bowl???? How are the toads suppose to drink????

Re: Fire Belly Toads
They are in 3 inches of water! The whole tank is water as they are mostly semi-aquatic. They spend most of their time in the water hiding in rocks with just their little heads poking out. They are very active and the 3 males call constantly.
Let me know if you ever want me to pick you some up here and ship them to you. They are under $6.00 a toad. Sometimes they only have the brown ones available. I do admit to liking the green ones more.

Re: Fire Belly Toads
Nice setup. Wicker, do you have a walmart near you? Almost all walmarts I've ever been to has them. I bought some from walmart though and they all died in like a day, so might not be good to get theirs. Sheri, you should get some blue ones to go with the green and brown ones.
Re: Fire Belly Toads
Thanks, Greg. I had a more elaborate setup at first, but they rarely used anything but the open water and the larger rocks for hiding, so I cleaned it up a bit.
I would love to get blue ones but haven't ever seen any for sale. Do you know anyone selling them?

Re: Fire Belly Toads
The Walmart near me sometimes has the blue ones. Sheri, I'll tell you what. If I see some blue ones I'll buy them keep them for a week or so and make sure they're fine then send them to you. If you like.
Same goes for you wicker.

That would be sweet! We can go over the details when/if you see any. Thanks!

Re: Fire Belly Toads
Have you treated yours? The ones at walmart's biggest problem seems to be chytrid. And I would treat them if yours are.
Re: Fire Belly Toads
I have not treated any of my frogs/toads. I would quarantine them for a while first to be on the safe side.

Re: Fire Belly Toads
Yea I'd fatten them up and make sure they were fine and send them on there way. Then its up to vous! French.
Re: Fire Belly Toads
Your toads are beautiful! I can't keep common stuff well. I tend to pay too much attention to them, stress them out and they don't make it.
Do you know if the brown ones are a different species than the green ones? I don't know a whole lot about them.

The european ones are brown but I don't know if those are european or just brown orientals. Honestly I don't know if there is a difference. They say there is, but I have my doubts.
Re: Fire Belly Toads
I kind of hope they are the Euroean ones. That's kind of cool.

I had a similar set up with no gravel for mine. I have about 5-6 inches of water with a good filter. And I had a breeding pair in 2001. I had 40 plus baby toadlets. I ended up getting store credit at my herp shop... I had too many.

Re: Fire Belly Toads
Mego, I was told that the brown are Bombina bombina (European fire-bellied toads) and the green are Bombina orientalis (oriental fire-bellied toads). Distinctions are to be the overall thickness of the toad and the green spots on the back of the head of the Bombina bombina. My brown are definitely thicker all around than the green and both have green spots on the backs of their heads like the one photo shows. Then again, I have been known to be a sucker...
Hey Jaws, I have a very nice filter (you can see the toads sitting on it in the pics) and constant calling like 24/7 from my three males. No babies though. I have had them since October.

Cool...Thanks for the response. I have been curious about that for sometime. I take it that they interbreed? Or do they tend to breed true to their own subsecies?

I like watching fbt hunt. My only problem with my fbt is I think I had like 4 males, that would not shut up haha. I am going to snag more of these, I am looking for the blueish tint ones

I know exactly what you mean. I have 3 males and they call constantly. They sound like little dogs barking from far away.
